Eminem Lose Yourself Preliminary Task Finished

Below is my finished version of the preliminary task which was to recconstruct a music video. I chose Eminem Lose Yourself as I believed it involved a variety of different shots and angles so it would give us good practise for the the actual task. I included colour adjusting in the video to give it more personality, the shots of him in the past all have a greenish tint and the shots of him in the present day have a reddy/orangey colour tinting to them. Despite not having as many locations and props as we had originally thought we improvised to try and create the same atmosphere.

Edited digipack photos

I decided to edit the photos into having a kind of 'inbetweeners' look as the target audience is teenagers and it would appeal to them, also the phrase 'YOLO' means 'You Only Live Once' which is a slang term teenagers can relate to. The star symbol is also a big part of the young boy band look so I included it both on the inlay and back cover.

Digipack Photos

For my digipack photos I decided to go for the typical boy band look of having the band all lined up and also having individual photos of them so they could each be individually put onto the cover. I used my reasearch of boy band album covers to be able to position the actors for the photoshooting, I was mostly influenced my the JLS album cover as I used the idea of overlapping the shoulders.

Star image of an artist

Avril Lavigne

In this picture of Avril Lavinge it displays her as a rebellious punk rock skater girl, this is shown using her clothing, pose and location. She is wearing a green boys tee shirt with a  hat on backwards and a school tie. Her tattoos are displayed which symbolises rebellious behavior, however, not much skin is on show which shows that there isn't any sexual; appeal trying to be given off. Also She seems to be in a rundown area judging from the cracked wall behind her which adds to the idea of the punk rock girl. She looks very outgoing and comfortable with the pose she is in and it adds to a type of tomb boy look.

The picture below clearly displays Avril Lavigne as a sexy yet rebellious and slightly punk girl. The eye contact from her its almost evil and sexy as the black eye make up darkens her eyes. There is a lot of skin on show creating big sexual appeal as she is barely covered by her clothing. She has a red streak through her hair which shows that even though she is a displays as a kind of princess artist, she still has a bad side to her. The pose that she is in is a very confident pose as she is head on to the audience with her hands behind her head as if to almost say 'bring it on'.

Both of the above pictures compare to this as she looks very vulnerable and almost nerdy with the glasses and the pose. This compares to the confident and bad girl looks in the above shots. another thing that has also changed is the amount of skin on display. She has minimal skin showing which completes the intellectual look she is displaying. This picture is trying to display her as a role model for younger girls compared to her older self who was all about being a rebel and a troublemaker.

CD cover analysis

In this front cover of Chamillionaire album 'The sound of revenge' he tries to display himself to the public as a tough guy who is not to be messed with. You can recognise this straight away by the name of the album, its almost like a warning that he is going to get his revenge, the large parental guidance badge is used as a type of badge of honour to show that he's so tough and gangster that he needs a warning. The pose he is in also give the audience an impression that he is not somebody to mess with his body is facing the away from the audience however he as turned his head and is making eye contact with them whilst clenching his fist just below as if he is preparing to fight. Only a small part of his face is shown and the low key lighting creates shadows on his face which lets us see even less of his face. The background is a city at night with lots of skysrapers andhe gives the impression that it is his neighbourhood and he wants us to leave.  The font used is almost a millitary font and also on his hat it says 'Chamillitary' which shows he is displaying himself as a type of solider.

The back cover also has eye contact with the audience however, this time you can see more of his face and his body is facing the camera. You can see his chain around his neck witch shows his wealth. Lastly the white glow with the smudge effect make him look more powerful and respectable.

Boy Band Album cover examples

As our chosen genre is Boy Band, I decided to look up what a typical Boy Band album cover would look like in order to be able to create our own design. I look through lots of covers and found a correlation of the band members stood in a group displaying either their whole bodies, waist up or just their heads. This is a typical boy band convention which we could use when we design our own cover.

Genre Conventions

A boy band , in pop, hip hop and R&B music, is defined as a popular music consisting of about 3-6 male performers. Despite the term "band", boy band members usually do not play musical instruments, however, some bands such as 'McFly' are exceptions. Most boy bands dance as well as sing, usually giving highly choreographed performances. Mainly, boy bands are brought together by a producer through an audition process, although some of them form on their own. Boy bands are also known for their CD covers they typically have a picture of the whole band stood close together or even of just their heads as below.

Preliminary Plan

We have planned to do our film during our lesson on tuesday 3rd July however, we knew we would fit all the filming into the hour so we planned to go over the hour as we both had free periods the lesson after so we didnt rush the filming as we knew we could take our time with each of the shots. Also we looked at a weather forecast and we decided that even though it was predicted to rain that we could use it to our advantage to create more of an atmosphere for the presnt self shots. Also we couldnt find anybody with sufficients time to help us with the acting so we decided that we would use one of our group members to act for us which may have given him less oppotunity to be involved in the ideas as he had to learn the lyrics and gestures. Lastly we had to imprevise with the clothing as we did not have a hoodie that was similar to Eminem's so we had to use the only hoodie that we had. However this was not too big a problem as the task did not include having to use the exact clothing.
