Artists Permission Update

After we decided to change our chosen Genre from Dubstep to Rock changing Artist from Modestep to Raided By Waves we had to ask permission from the band to use both their song and whether they could perform in our video. Harry from our group contacted the lead singer of the band James on Facebook and pitched our ideas to him, James replied saying that the band were very interested the band would be very interested In performing for us. Below show permission from the leader of the band Janmes on our facebook conversation. James was interested in performing a song called 'Every Second', however, after mentioning our need for narrative we all desided that 'Secret Sin' would be the best choice due to the meaning behind the song as it would be possible to create a narrative for it. After we explained our reasons the band were happy to perform 'Secret Sin'.

Filming schedule

The scheduled filming day for our music video is October 23rd which was agreed during our meeting with MTV last month. We are being given several hours to film in the hope that we can get all we need in one day. As a group we drew up a small plan of what we plan to do with our time to make sure we waste as little time as possible.

12:00 - Arrive at MTV studios with band

12:15 - Sort out costume and make up, make sure cameras are working and lighting is all sorted

1:00 - Start filming

2:30 - Break

3:00 - Continue filming

4:30 - Break

5:00 - Finish up filming

5:20 - Pack up equipment

6:00 - Leave

This plan will be useful when trying to keep good time management on the day as it could get very busy. This will help us to remain professional and give us the best chance of capturing all the footage we need and have planned to capture.

Costume

In order for our artist/actors to present themselves authentically the Mise en Scene and type of clothing that each member of the video wears is very important. We plan to dress our band members in mostly black, this fits into the title of the song "Secret Sin" insinuating there is something to hide and to compliment the overall dark theme we are going for within the video. Not only this but modern Rock bands such as Green Day, Foo Fighters, Lost Prophets and Nickleback are often seen sporting black coloured attire during music videos and live performances such as t-shirts, ripped jeans and vests. We also plan to dress Lucy in a black with addition of black boots and a sleeveless top to show off her tattoos as we feel this an effective way of portraying her as the "Rock chick" runner girl we are trying to create.

As the video is indoors the band will be seen black t-shirts, perhaps with some form of logo or insignia on as this is popular within Rock, dark skinny jeans as well as black shoes such as vans, converse or boots as these items of clothing are all extremely popular among modern Rock bands not only this but the bands fans and audience members will be able to relate to these choices of costume especially items such as skinny jeans and vans as a lot of them will often wear the same thing. We also plan to dress one of the band members in a scarf as this is something that represents "classic" or "old school" Rock and can be seen being worn by the frontman of the video for Bon Jovi Livin' On A Prayer.

Lighting and Camera Positions

As a group we decided on where we believed would be the best positioning for each camera as well as lights. Will then drew up our thought so we could clearly display on the day of filming what we wanted to do. Here is a copy of what we drew up;

I believe that by drawing this up it give us all more of an idea as to what we are going to be doing, making us more organised in relation to where we want the cameras and should help to make us efficient on the day in capturing all the footage we need.

Storyboard Drawn Up

Below displays a drawn up storyboard of what we plan to film at MTV. We drew up all of the shots we want to include within the video and organised them in order of how we want them to appear within the video. As a group we believe that this was a vital part of planning for our video.

This plan will help us with the concept of the video and the planning of certain shots. Overall I believe this will help us to create a more professional video as we could easily display what we need and when we need it.

Audinece Research

In order to get some detailed quantitative audience research I have done some personal interviews. This way I could get opinions and feelings of a variation of people finding out what they expect and want to see in Rock Music Videos.

Questions
1. What kind of things would you typically expect to see from a Rock Music Video?
2. Which conventions do you think our most important in terms of what you would want to see?
3. How would you make a Rock Video effective?

Answers
1. In most Rock videos there is a lot of performance. In most the videos I watch they show the whole band performing, sometimes they take the performance from their gigs.
2. I like to see the performance and a focus on the band image, most of the Rock artists I listen to rely on their image and its something that I think is significant so I like to see the bands true image.
3. To make an effective video I would have a lot of performance shots of the band backed up with a story behind the song about the lyrics.

1. The band, guitars, drums. Sometimes a story about the band or lead singer.
2. I think it is important to actually see the band instead of just something random, I do however like some excitement in the video.
3. If I made a Rock Music Video I would to a recording of the whole band on stage, I would have a lot of shots of the band and close-ups of them playing their instruments, for example maybe a long clip of a guitar solo. To give it more excitement I would record maybe the band back stage to show a bit about their life outside performance.

1.  In a Rock video like near enough all videos I would expect to see the artist. In Rock it is usually the band performing but sometimes it would be a story but acted by the band. They do all however usually feature the lead artist and some instruments.
2. I think it is important that it features the band as this is what it is about and what the audience want to see. I think the video should also have a story because this is what makes the video interesting and worth watching.
3. If I was to make a music video I would have a mix of performance and story. It would be a mix between them performing and a story so maybe start with them playing as the band for and audience or just practicing and then it turning into some kind or story.

Interview Analysis
Just by interviewing three different Rock fans I have learnt that they all like and want the same things. Using this information could help us create something that the people I interviewed and people like them would enjoy.

The first main point that I have reduced from this information is that the audience want to see performance aspect of the band. They like to see them playing their instruments and performing, as performing in front of audience would be extremely difficult for us to create this would be out of the question but we have a studio to work in so we will show the band playing together and performing. Including all the instruments would please the audience as most of them said they like to see a lot of instruments and shots of them playing the instruments.

Another thing that all the people I interviewed wants is some kind of story, something to make it more interesting. We had always planned to have a story but having this information tells us that it is something that needs a lot of focus. With what I have analyzed already I know the audience want performance and a story, so therefore the perfect thing to do is make a mix of both.

This information has been useful for telling us the simple layout of the video but it has also shown us a variation of small factors that we could consider. Such as close-up of instruments and solos, back stage footage and a story with a lot of action.

Equiptment

In order to make our video as professional as possible, we want to be able to use the best equipment available as we believed it would be easier for us to stick to our convention of the genre rock. Due to the fact we gained permission to film at MTV in London we will also gain access to their equipment. We will be using their HD professional cameras which will allow us to create a high quality video as the cameras should be give us the best chance of capturing the footage we need. MTV's lighting set up will allow us to create our own lighting set up for the video to help set the mood of the video. Also the dolly's for each individual camera which will enable us to capture a variety of shots as well as a vision mixer which means we will be able to line up different shots and practically edit on the go. We we use iMacs to edit our finished video as we used these devices last year and are all comfortable with using them. Finally we also plan on taking a HDD with us to store our footage on and having a PA system set up in the. We hope that as a result of all this equipment being available to us that we will be able to create the correct type of video for our genre, as well as making it look as professional as possible.

'Smells Like Teen Spirit'- Nirvana

In this music video the scene is set in a school gym and given a sepia effect throughout the video, this helps the audience link the lyrics to the actual location and setting of the video, the stereotypical view of teenagers being rebellious or unclean. The genre of this video is rock and the video also displays the rebellious attitude of rock, for example, mosh pits, smashing instruments and crowd surfing. Not only this but the Mise en Scene of the video also displays the Rock Genre with the instruments, such as drums, guitar and bass as well as the bands. The costumes featured in the video represent Rock but also have a clear link to the actual title of the song and that lyrics as their main target audience were "teenagers". They are seen to be wearing jeans and t-shirts, something that was very popular within the genre in the 90's.

Also in the video there are a group of cheerleaders that can be seen wearing stereotypical costumes, this helps to emphasise the location of the video being at a school or high school. The target audience for this particular artist and the song it's self would be between 16-24,  both "teenagers" and students. The cutting rate in this video is reasonably quick, cutting between the performance of the band and the crowd moshing throughout. Nirvana were followed by most teenagers in their dressing as they usually dressed casually in clothes such as jeans and shirts/T-shirts. Both the band and crowd are seen to also be wearing quite dark clothing as well, this fits in with the scene of the video. The performance the band give throughout the video again is a typical Rock concert, after each chorus the band gets the crowd moving more and more until eventually the song ends and the band smash there instruments, something which again may appeal more to teenagers as they will want to copy their idols. Throughout the video I believe that the band whilst causing destruction are also portrayed as very likeable and respected people especially within the world of Rock.

Kurt Cobain can be seen singing into the camera as well during the video, making the video feel more personal as if he is singing to not just the audience in the video but the audience watching the video. The video contains a variety of different shots, such as close ups, long shots and also high angle shots and a panning shots. There is also a variety of shots that show a cleaner dancing to the music, he is very much older than anyone else in the video, what this may represent is an older generation reminiscing or wanting to re-discover there youth.

Music Video Decision

After doing some research into videos associated with the genre of Rock and after a discussing our ideas as a group about what is realistically possible, we have decided that we would like our music video to be recorded in a studio as it allows us capture both the performance and personal side of the band. We would like the band to perform to the cameras as if they are performing to an audience through the camera, however, no such audience is present. This is used in many other popular music videos such as, 'Green Day - American Idiot', and 'Foo Fighters - Pretender'. For our narrative we would like a sound girl to be on set observing the band perform and as the performance progresses she will begin to give off flirtatious signals towards James the lead singer and this connection between each other during the video  will progress so that they audience can observe this and relate to it, however at the end of the video we believe that he should seem to be going along with it but then he walks straight past her to his genuine girlfriend to create the sense of a 'Secret Sin'.

Digipack Analysis Photos

Below displays proof of our group analysing 'The Red Hot Chili Peppers' on A3 paper so we can clearly exhibit our ideas through photos which we planned to put onto this blog. As well as this we created our groups logo for 'Lithium Studio'. Will is a very creative artist and decided to design the logo himself, he decided to use the element symbol 'LI' to present the word Lithium.

Chosen Genre Update

Due to the Dubstep idea falling through as Modestep were unable to perform for us we looked and found another artist which is in the rock genre. We believe that rock will be an easier genre to recreate and it will help us to achieve a greater level of success with our video.

Chosen Artist Update

Due to Research we decided that Dubstep would be a hard genre to portray in a music video both for performance and narrative. As we had gained permission to use an MTV Studio we agreed as a group that a rock band would be perfect for the set up of a music studio as rock bands are known for their performances. We discovered through friends that there was a rock band nearby in Harlow that would most probably be interested so we approached them and they agreed to be our chosen artist. The band is named 'Raided By Waves'.

Our Performers

The performers that we will be using for our video will be the band Raided By Waves themselves (James Bennett, Charlie Caine and Navid Asghari as well as Lucy Maylin who will be playing the role of our sound girl.)

James Bennett - Lead Singer
We had many reasons for choosing the band, however, the main reasons were the fact that they wrote the song and could tell us exactly what the lyrics meant, making it easier to think up a narrative. Also they are natural performers who have previous experience of shooting a music video. Lastly it helps us to make our video look more authentic and professional.

We decided to choose Lucy as we wanted to find a girl how displayed the typical 'Rock Chick' look and she ticked all the boxes due to the clothing, tattoo's and general appearance. Also she is a model who has experience of being in front of the camera which will be useful when shooting the video as she will know what it is like. The variety of tattoos which Lucy has help us hugely stick to our convention as that is steriotypically the biggest factor of appearance for a 'Rock. Again we hope that Lucy will help us to create a more realistic and professional video as a result as well as giving the video another convention of rock, sex appeal.

Lucy Victoria Maylin - Model

'Foo Fighters- Pretender' Performance Studio Analysis

As we have already chosen that we are filming our video in a studio I chosen to look at the particular video because it displays the bands performance in a large studio. The video is a cross between band performance and narrative music video as it has cuts away from the studio for the narrative. The video opens with the lead singer walking into the warehouse and is then followed by the rest of the band, it then cuts to the band playing the opening of the song.

In the performance part of the video there are a lot of quick cuts between the different band members and the band as a whole. Camera shots that involved are close-ups of the band members particularly the lead and the band members instruments. There are also a lot of long shots of the whole band in the warehouse. We could use some of these camera shots in our performance despite the fact that they are not in a studio as such, more of a warehouse. However, we could still use these performance techniques. Long shots of the whole band would not be as easy because we will not have this kind of size but it stills gives us a better understanding of how we could use the studio.

The other section of this video is the narrative. At the chorus of the song the riot control man enter and we start to see conflict. We are shown close ups of the band and the riot controllers and consistent cuts between both of them. This is something we will not be recreating as they have brought the narrative into the studio unlike most rock videos which will separate the performance and the narrative and this is what we plan to do.

Chosen Genre

As a group we have decided to use Dubstep as our genre as we have personal links to an artist through group members and also it allows us to experiment with our narrative and performance to a greater level.

Chosen Artist

The artist we have chosen to use for our music video are Modestep. We chose to do Modestep as we had a link with them though a member of our group as he has two of the members of the band on Facebook. We messaged them on Facebook asking permission to use their song and whether or not they could perform for us.

How You Remind Me- Nickelback Narative Analysis

Nickelback are comparable with our selected artist for a number of reasons. The biggest comparison is the narrative as he is singing about his emotion and you really see the artist get angry and upset during the performance side of the video. For our narrative we plan to film about the inspiration behind the lyrics which is about a guy who goes to Copenhagen and falls in love out there but the problem is that he has a girlfriend back in the UK and the song is about the secret sin (the girl). In our music video we really want to capture the emotion of the song through the leader singer. Throughout the song the lead singer sings directly into the camera whilst maintaining eye contact with it. Also later in the song the lead singer begins to shout the lyrics whilst looking up to display his anger.

The shots of the narrative showed the lead singer with his head in his hand looking depressed and alone, also the dark tinting of the shots and low key lighting gave the scene an even gloomier/depressing mood. Also he is imagining the girl still being with him which is displayed use high key lighting, the camera is used to make the woman look beautiful, also there is a close up of the womans eyes staring straight at the camera which gives the audience the impression she is looking at the audience. At the end of the song he rejects the girl, as he sings that he is sorry for handing her a heart worth breaking. Also the idea of the lead singer imagining the woman could be an effective narrative to use. Lastly the scenery of the video is set in his house, on the street and at a concert and during the video he is walking to the concert.

Rock Logos and Symbols

Here we have researched the different types of logos/titles related around the genre of rock in order to give us an idea for when we come to make and design our digi-packs. We mostly found that the area of rock is shown through rebellion giving the impression to audiences what the music is like perphaps through this. We have also realised that it is potrayed through the use of cartoon drawings in the pictures or fonts this could be done to show that it isnt realisitic or contributing to the fact for example the use of the skull cartoon for the guns and roses logo.
